A surge of bets have been placed on Parmjit Gill to win Leicester South back from Labour

Parmjit Gill, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Leicester South has been tipped as the favourite to win the south seat from Labour.

A surge of bets have been placed on Parmjit Gill to win Leicester South back from Labour's Sir Peter Soulsby.

According to local press, It follows a rise in popularity for the Liberal Democrats following leader Nick Clegg's winning performance on last week's TV debate. Every Lib Dem candidate in the county has now had their odds on winning slashed.

Parmjit Gill held the seat following a by-election in 2004, but lost to Sir Peter in a close General Election contest the following year.

Parmjit Gill told local press, "Ever since the debate, there's been a sense of enthusiasm among the people of Leicester South about the Liberal Democrats. People keep mentioning how successful Nick was in the debate and it has encouraged people to take a closer look at our policies and what we stand for, which is a good thing. Because of this, I'm not surprised Betfair now ranks me as favourite to win the seat, but I will not be complacent."
