Lib Dems urge Councillors to act to save heart unit

23 Mar 2011

Liberal Democrats on Leicestershire County Council have highlighted the need for the public, as well as all Councillors, to respond to an online consultation (www.ipsos-mori.com/safeandsustainable ) to save the Childrens Heart unit at Glenfield hospital.

Dr Sarah Hill, Lib Dem Spokesperson on Adults and Communities said: "The Tory motion on this is all well and good but sadly does very little. Of course we voted for it, but to genuinely make a difference everyone need to respond to the online consultation, not just the Council. If the Council responds to the consutlation as a corporate body, it will only count as a single response even if all 55 councillors vote in favour. "

Dr Hill said: "In order to have the greatest impact each and every councillor needs to make the effort to respond individually to have the best chance. Each Councillor then needs to get their local Communities to take part as well, this is a job for everyone."

She added: "The leader of the Council Mr Parsons should be doing more by using his influence to persuade the Tory Health Minister and the Prime Minister to save the unit. Motions to full council look good in election leaflets, but the priority is to save the unit and that requries councillors to take action themselves."
